SAMSUNG/ LANDFALL

Concept Design for the installation by Slanted Studios

On February 22, 2016 SAMSUNG opened 837 WASHINGTON, their flagship playground in the heart of New York’s Meatpacking District. They commissioned a digital installation for their 32’ x 30’ screen wall that would creatively visualize the rise of the Hudson River between 2PM and 2AM on the evening of HURRICANE SANDY — a storm surge that would leave the store (and most of lower Manhattan) under water.

I was brought in to conceptualize how we could use hand painted brush strokes and textures to represent the water and its dramatic rise in elevation. Mapped to data from NOAA’s Hudson River Tide Gages, the movement of the water becomes more and more turbulent as it reaches the fourteen foot apex.

I loved the juxtaposition of the visually analog paint style controlled by an incredibly technical, data-driven process on such a massive screen (three-stories high!).
